enthusiastic volunteers in colorful uniforms gathered
to fight the first major land battle of the war. Confident
that their foes would turn and run, neither side anticipated
the smoke, din and death of battle. Nearly one year
later, both sides met again on the same battlefield
with the Confederates winning a solid victory bringing
them to the height of their power.”
-Balls Bluff, Leesburg, VA- Free Battlefield tours
conducted by volunteer tour guides every Saturday and
Sunday at 11 am. and 1 pm. from Saturday April 4 until
the end of October. Surrounding the Ball's Bluff National
Cemetery, this regional park preserves the site of the
Battle of Ball's Bluff, the largest Civil War engagement
to take place in Loudoun County. Hiking trails and interpretive
signs aid in understanding this important and tragic
part of American history.
-Harpers Ferry, MD- The Park is open daily from 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m. The Battle of Harpers Ferry was fought from
September 12 to September 15, 1862. As Robert E. Lee's
Confederate army invaded Maryland, a portion of his
army under Maj. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall"
Jackson surrounded and bombarded the Union garrison
at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia), capturing
its soldiers. Jackson's men then rushed to Sharpsburg,
Maryland, to rejoin Lee for the Battle of Antietam.
