Civil War Sites

-Battlefields

-Manassas, VA-Guided Tours are at 11 am. and 1 pm. Located 35 minutes away. “In the summer of 1861, enthusiastic volunteers in colorful uniforms gathered to fight the first major land battle of the war. Confident that their foes would turn and run, neither side anticipated the smoke, din and death of battle. Nearly one year later, both sides met again on the same battlefield with the Confederates winning a solid victory bringing them to the height of their power.”

-Balls Bluff, Leesburg, VA- Free Battlefield tours conducted by volunteer tour guides every Saturday and Sunday at 11 am. and 1 pm. from Saturday April 4 until the end of October. Surrounding the Ball's Bluff National Cemetery, this regional park preserves the site of the Battle of Ball's Bluff, the largest Civil War engagement to take place in Loudoun County. Hiking trails and interpretive signs aid in understanding this important and tragic part of American history.

-Harpers Ferry, MD- The Park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Battle of Harpers Ferry was fought from September 12 to September 15, 1862. As Robert E. Lee's Confederate army invaded Maryland, a portion of his army under Maj. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson surrounded and bombarded the Union garrison at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia), capturing its soldiers. Jackson's men then rushed to Sharpsburg, Maryland, to rejoin Lee for the Battle of Antietam.
